Solo project

This project I did out of my own initiative. When I studied in Antwerp, I moved a lot. I moved 4 times within 5 years, so I wanted to create furniture that is easy for moving around a lot.

My solution to the problem was furniture that could be easily assembled and disassembled. The design drivers are: easy to assemble, no additional tools necessary, differences between components as few as possible, compact to store and freedom to alter the size.

Briefing

This project I did out of my own initiative. When I studied in Antwerp, I moved a lot. I moved 4 times within 5 years, so I wanted to create furniture that is easy for moving around a lot.

Intro

My solution to the problem of moving around a lot demontabel furniture was a shelf closet that can be stored compactly and constructed without screws or tools. The design drivers are: easy to assemble, no additional tools necessary, differences between components as few as possible, compact to store and freedom to alter the size.

Shelves cabinet

The concept started with the shelf closet which was designed to maintain its position by taking advantage of the gravitational force. This is done by a set of welded together steel tubes and three planks made to measure. The tubes hold the shelves in a horizontal position while the shelves hold the tubes in an angled position where they can't fall. The closet can be assembled with two frames but the wood has to be very stiff. Preferably, the closet is constructed with three or more frames. How many frames and how long the planks are is up to the user.

Table

To expand this idea, I decided to make this concept into a series. The series of furniture contain, besides the shelf closet, a table and a chair. In the designs, I wanted to maintain the concept of: not using screws, easy to modify and repetition between parts. In the design process, these values were traded off against usability.

With the table, I had to sink the frame into the wood for stability. This makes the table less modifiable but more usable.

Chair

In the design of the chair I tried to use the same frames but I couldn't because of the backrest. Therefore I mirrored the frames instead of repetition. However, I did manage to maintain the chair's customizability.

In my opinion, the closet fits the design drivers overall the best. After all, the concept was born out of an idea instead of the other way around. I think the chair and table fit in the series enough nonetheless.
