Chess

Solo project

I wanted to create a chess set which can be described as: futuristic, minimalistic and timeless.

I've always liked the game of chess. Therefore I really enjoyed working on this project. I didn't design this set to be just a design but I bought a 3d printer for it so I could print the pieces and play with them.

For inspiration, I've looked at modern skyscrapers like the Shanghai tower. I've also used a set at home to measure the official measurements.

I wanted the pieces to look like skyscrapers out of a science fiction movie but still very recognizable as chess pieces. The chess pieces each have six smooth surfaces, stretching from top to bottom. For the knight I had to make an exception so it could have it’s distinctive sharp nose.

I've used Keyshot to render the pieces. For context, I've designed a box for the set which functions as a playing board.

These are photos I made from the printed set. I've printed them with a layer height of 0.12 mm which is about as good as it gets with PLA and the Creality ender 3v2. The layer lines are hardly visible with this high resolution.
