Topology

Solo project

I wanted to use topology optimization to create a material efficient BMX. I did this project to learn how to use this tool in Solidworks.

A BMX is exposed to lots of stress. This makes the subject of this project very suitable for optimization. When optimized, the shape of the model gets its really distinctive look. It reminds me of a bone-like structure.

As input I used a big solid block to give SolidWorks as much room as possible. I marked the points of interest such as the locations of weight distribution and where the parts are mounted on to the frame.

The optimization calculations gave me a guideline of where I could remove material without losing much strength.

The output of SolidWorks was a polygonal shape which I used as an underlay for my surface model.
